What is Plastic CNC Milling?

Plastic CNC milling is a way to make custom parts from plastic blocks. We use special computer-guided machines to cut away material until we get the exact shape you need. At Istar Machining, we’re experts at turning plastic blocks into finished parts with great accuracy.

Why Choose Our Plastic CNC Milling Service?

  • High accuracy – We can make parts within ±0.001″ (about the width of a human hair)
  • Quick turnaround – Get parts in as fast as 24 hours to 5 days
  • Many plastic types – We work with over 50 different plastics
  • Expert help – Our team gives advice on the best materials for your project

Our CNC prototype machining services help you test your ideas before making lots of parts.

Our Machines and Capabilities

Our shop has top-quality equipment:

  • 3-axis to 5-axis mills for simple to complex shapes
  • Micro-machining tools for tiny features (smaller than 1mm)
  • Surface finishes from as-machined to polished
  • Maximum part size: 48″ x 24″ x 12″

We handle everything from simple flat parts to complex 3D shapes with our 5 axis machining center.

Industries We Serve

Medical

We make surgery tool handles, MRI-compatible parts, and bio-compatible housings. Our plastic parts meet strict medical standards.

Aerospace

Our flame-retardant panels, lightweight bushings, and heat-resistant parts help keep planes safe and efficient.

Automotive

We create sensor mounts, non-conductive enclosures, and wear-resistant guides for cars and trucks.

Electronics

Our plastic parts provide insulation, protection, and structure for electronic devices.

Our Plastic CNC Milling Process

  1. Send us your CAD file – We take STEP, IGES, SLDPRT, and X_T files
  2. Get a quick quote – Often within hours
  3. We review your design – We check for any issues and suggest fixes
  4. Manufacturing begins – Our machines start cutting your parts
  5. Quality check – We measure to make sure everything is perfect
  6. Finishing touches – We can add special finishes if needed
  7. Delivery – We ship your parts on time

Design Tips for Plastic CNC Milling

To get the best results and save money:

  • Make wall thickness at least 0.04″ (1mm) for acrylics, 0.08″ (2mm) for tougher plastics
  • Keep hole depths less than 6 times the diameter to avoid tool breakage
  • Add corner radii (at least 0.02″) to prevent stress cracks
  • Think about how the part will be held during machining

Post-Processing Options

After milling, we can:

  • Deburr edges to remove sharpness
  • Polish surfaces for a smooth finish
  • Add threads for screws and bolts
  • Anneal parts to release stress
  • Clean ultrasonically for medical parts
  • Install inserts for stronger threads

Quality Assurance

Every part we make goes through strict checks:

  • 100% inspection of critical dimensions
  • Surface finish verification
  • Material certifications when needed
  • ISO 9001, AS9100, and ITAR compliance

Frequently Asked Question

Prices start at $50 for simple parts and go up to $2,500+ for large, complex parts. The cost depends on:

  • Size of the part
  • Type of plastic
  • Complexity
  • How many you need
  • How fast you need them

Yes! We can polish and finish CNC-milled parts to look like injection-molded ones.

PTFE (Teflon) and PVC need special tools and expertise. Our team knows how to handle these tricky materials.

CNC milling uses rotating tools to remove material, while CNC turning spins the plastic while tools cut it. We offer both services.
