What’s Polishing?

Polishing is a way to make things smooth and shiny. When we polish something, we rub it with special tools to make it look nice. At Istar Machining, we use polishing to make our parts look better and work better.

What Happens When We Polish?

Polishing takes off tiny bits from the top of things. These bits are so small you can’t see them! When we polish, we:

  1. Take off bumps
  2. Fill in tiny holes
  3. Make things shine
  4. Make things smooth This makes parts work better and look nicer. Our team at Istar Machining knows how to polish all kinds of parts just right.

How Does Polishing Work?

Polishing works by using abrasives. Abrasives are things that can scrape off tiny bits from a part. There are two main ways to polish:

Wet Polishing

  • Uses water or oil
  • Keeps parts cool
  • Makes less dust
  • Works well for metal cnc parts

Dry Polishing

  • No water or oil
  • Makes more dust
  • Good for some kinds of parts
  • Works fast

Types of Polishing We Do

At Istar Machining, we can do many types of polishing:

1. Mechanical Polishing

This uses tools that spin or move back and forth. We use pads with grit (tiny bits that scratch) to make parts smooth. We start with rough grit and then use finer and finer grit until the part shines.

2. Chemical Polishing

This uses special acid to make things smooth. The acid takes off a tiny bit of the top layer. This works well for:

  • Stainless steel
  • Copper
  • Brass

3. Automated Polishing

We use big machines that can polish many parts at once. This is good when you need lots of parts done the same way.

4. Hand Polishing

Our skilled workers use their hands and tools to polish parts. This is best for:

  • Special parts
  • Parts with odd shapes
  • Parts that need extra care

Istar Machining can polish many kinds of things:

For Factories:

  • Parts for computers
  • Lenses
  • Medical tools
  • Car parts

For People:

  • Jewelry
  • Floor tiles
  • Car parts One customer had us polish some aluminum cnc machining parts for their new car. The parts were so shiny they looked like mirrors!

Tools We Use to Polish

We use many tools to get the job done right:

For Big Jobs:

  • Computer-controlled polishing machines
  • Special systems for perfect finishes
  • Tools that can work on big parts

For Small Jobs:

  • Hand tools
  • Special pads
  • Fine grit compounds

Facts About Polishing

Did you know?

  • Our diamond tools can make parts 60% smoother than normal tools[^1]
  • Polished medical parts are 75% less likely to rust[^2]
  • Polishing can make silicon parts so smooth they have bumps less than 0.5 nm high (that’s super tiny!)
  • Our machines can polish parts 40% faster than doing it by hand[^3]
  • Polished floors reflect 50% more light than unpolished floors[^4]

What Makes Good Polishing?

The quality of polishing depends on:

  1. Grit size – We start rough and end smooth
  2. Pressure – Too much can damage parts
  3. Speed – If we go too fast, parts get hot
  4. Oil or water – Helps keep parts cool
  5. Material – Different things need different polishing

Case Studies: How Polishing Helps

Medical Tools

A doctor needs tools that won’t rust or hold germs. We polished stainless steel medical tools until they were so smooth that germs couldn’t stick to them. The doctor told us that these tools were much easier to keep clean.

Computer Parts

A computer company needed parts with no scratches at all. Even tiny scratches would make their computers fail. We used our finest polishing to make parts that had no scratches, even when looked at with strong microscopes.

Dental Tools

Dental tools need to be very smooth. We polished dental tools with diamond polish. Our polish made the tools 60% smoother than before. This made the tools better for patients.

What Is Polishing

Questions People Ask

Does polishing hurt the part?

No, if done right. We know how to polish without damaging your parts.

Can I polish things at home?

Yes! You can polish small things at home with kits. But for big or important parts, it’s best to let Istar Machining do it.

What’s the difference between polishing and waxing?

Polishing takes off tiny bits to make something smooth. Waxing puts a thin layer on top to protect it.
